Ski Trip Road Food:Sugar's BBQ in Embudo

She'll come up on you faster than you think. Here's the scene: You're snaking your way up the Rio Grande Gorge on NM 68. You and your crew are headed for Angel Fire, Taos, or maybe Red River. Or maybe Sipapu. You're starving. Be alert! You are about to encounter something special. Start throttling back at milepost 17 because as you sweep around that fast right hander, your going to want to bail. See that corrugated tin-covered trailer back off the highway on your right? That's the place, You have arrived at Sugar's and the best barbecue between the Pecos and Rio Grande.

Sugar's is for the sweet old bulldog you might see patrolling the joint. Step over the dog and up to the window and order the barbecued brisket burrito - the most wonderful concoction of shredded beef, New Mexico green chile and melted cheese you can imagine. If you're not in the mood for a burro, try Sugar's Frito Pie ... just like they used to make at Woolworth's on the Plaza in Santa Fe. OMG!!!

Sugars is located at mile marker 18 on NM state highway 68 between Velarde and Pilar. They are open year around for lunch, but it is best to call first for hours. You can reach Sugar's at 575-852-0604.
