Ski Trip Road Food:Sugar's BBQ in Embudo

She'll come up on you faster than you think. Here's the scene: You're snaking your way up the Rio Grande Gorge on NM 68. You and your crew are headed for Angel Fire, Taos, or maybe Red River. Or maybe Sipapu. You're starving. Be alert! You are about to encounter something special. Start throttling back at milepost 17 because as you sweep around that fast right hander, your going to want to bail. See that corrugated tin-covered trailer back off the highway on your right? That's the place, You have arrived at Sugar's and the best barbecue between the Pecos and Rio Grande.

Sugar's is for the sweet old bulldog you might see patrolling the joint. Step over the dog and up to the window and order the barbecued brisket burrito - the most wonderful concoction of shredded beef, New Mexico green chile and melted cheese you can imagine. If you're not in the mood for a burro, try Sugar's Frito Pie ... just like they used to make at Woolworth's on the Plaza in Santa Fe. OMG!!!

Sugars is located at mile marker 18 on NM state highway 68 between Velarde and Pilar. They are open year around for lunch, but it is best to call first for hours. You can reach Sugar's at 575-852-0604.

Just Desserts at Enchanted Forest

Picture this: You're cross country skiing on groomed trails through a snowy forest when suddenly you come upon a group of people with chocolate on their faces licking their fingers and eating from a table laden with delectable goodies. Yes, it's time again for Enchanted Forest's most popular event: "Just Desserts" Eat & Ski.

The theme is simple: Enchanted Forest puts homemade desserts from fine restaurants in Red River out on a five kilometer course and skiers ski out to the different sites and indulge. There is no competition involved, although skiers are advised not to start too late if they want to sample some of the more popular concoctions, such as, 18 Layer Chocolate Cinnamon Torte, White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, Tequila Lime Pie, Black Forest Cheesecake, Mountain Berry Cream Flan, Fudge, Wild Blueberry Pie, Texas Red's cheesecake, Triple Chocolate, Kahlua, Espresso Cake and much more.

The fun happens this Saturday, February 23rd from noon to 2:00 pm at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area outside Red River. For more information call the ski area at 575-754-2374.

Do Pajarito this Weekend ...

If you're looking for a place to ski or ride your board this weekend, Pajarito Mountain in the Jemez Mountains above Los Alamos might be a good place to head.

Spread out over a long ridge, Pajarito's 40 trails drape like crepe paper from the ridge line and offer skiers and riders an amazing variety of exciting runs.  Pajarito Mountain has about 280 acres of cleared skiable terrain, not counting some excellent tree skiing, and has some of the best bump skiing in the state. It is rarely crowded, and is noted for its lack of lift lines. That makes Pajarito a great choice for this President's Weekend. Pajarito will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, President's Day. Check it out!

Bush to Nation: “You Must Ski!”

A little publicized component of the administration’s economic stimulus package is the Presidential declaration ordering all Americans to go skiing or snowboarding this coming weekend, President’s Weekend, February 16, 17 and 18.

Given the excellent snow conditions, great learn-to-ski programs and the money-saving packages available at New Mexico resorts right now, there is no reason why each and every able-bodied man, woman, and child shouldn’t be complying with this directive from the White House. Southern Rockies Reservations is stepping up to do our part by brining on our special "A Team" staff to insure that you have a fabulous time this President's Weekend. Don't let your Commander in Chief down. Sign your family up today. See this web site for further instructions and the numbers to call!

Santa Fe: More than Great Skiing

One the best reasons to choose Santa Fe as your winter vacation destination is that there are so many things to do In Santa Fe. An off-slope option is a vist to one of the Museum of New Mexico's fasacinating museums. My favorite is the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture located on Museum Hill on Santa Fe's east side. This fine musem tells the stories of the Native American people of the Southwest from pre-historic through contemporary times. Its changing exhibitions draw from an unparalleled collection of Native American art and material culture representing the Pueblo, Navajo, Apache, and other indigenous cultures of the Southwest.

So if you're looking for a break from Ski Santa Fe's excellent mountain check out the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. It is open Tuesdays through Sundays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Love Is In the Air

Love IS in the air at New Mexico's ski resorts. You'll see it falling from the heavens ... large, white, downy flakes of snow the skiers and snowboarders just love like nothing else!

Right now, you will find the best snow conditions in years at ski areas around the Land of Enchantment. In the last week, some resorts in the north have picked up over 30" of fluffy white stuff. And now is a great time to come skiing, because you can save on lift tickets, lessons, lodging and more. And hey, what are you and your sweetie doing for Valentine's Day? How about a romantic weekend in the mountains just for the two of you. Oh yeah, love IS in the air!

New Mexico's Primary Colors: Red, White & Green

Skiers and snowboarders headed to New Mexico resorts this week are in for a colorful and flavorful time. Right now, the primary color on the New Mexico skier's palette is white ... from north to south our ski areas are covered with a deep blanket of snow. In January the snow gods were very good to us. Some resorts picked up over five feet of snow this month!

The other colors hungry skiers will be seeing are red and green, as in red and green chile. Many New Mexicans eat chile at almost every meal. They might start their day with huevos rancheros smothered in a fiery red chile. A green chile cheese burger sounds good for lunch. How about blue corn chicken enchiladas for dinner with both red and green (or served "Christmas", as they say)?

It's difficult to know which variety of chile is hotter, red or green, so many variables - weather, soil, variety, roasting methods and more change the flavor of chile. So when you are ordering New Mexican food and your server asks the question, "Would you like red or green?", don't hesitate to ask which one is hotter. Bon Appetite!
